That's getting the next request prioritised or turned down without a fight, getting your work seen by the people who fund the team, and building the case for the title.

I teach what I didn't have the first time I led a team, and I'm on my second go now. I went from data engineer to Head of Data Engineering on a fast track, with a 40% salary increase.

Most career advice for this is either motivational LinkedIn bullshit or written for managers who already have direct reports, and neither helps when you're doing the job without the title.
